My wife and I booked the wrong hotel room.

My wife (32F) and I (37M) went to a hotel last night and had the most ridiculous thing happen. We planned to stay the night in a different city and then continue on the next day. We booked ahead of time, but never bothered to check the details until we arrived to check in.

The day we booked we had to deal with my daughter's plans and then had to share a ride with some family. By the time we were all done with those things we ended up pulling into the hotel at about 1 in the morning. Normally I would've made sure I had all the details saved somewhere, but we didn't. So I go inside and explain to the girl at the desk that we have a booking, give her my card and license, and wait for a key. I'm tired and sleepy at this point and wasn't paying much attention to everything. If I was, I would've noticed something is wrong when she said our stay would be until tomorrow morning. I thought nothing of it and took the "5th floor key". I grabbed our things and made my way to the elevator. I pressed 5 and rode it on up.

I got off the elevator and started walking. 535 was way down at the end of the hall. I got there, put the key in and walked in. And that's where the story gets weird. See, 535 wasn't a hotel room, but someone's home. We turned on the lights and were standing in a decorated living room. The first thing we both noticed was a large painting of a woman on the wall. We looked at each other and both realized this wasn't our hotel room. It was someone else's house. I thought maybe this was a mistake and the person who lives here owns the place, so I tried to call the front desk. There was no phone. This wasn't a hotel room.

So we shut off the lights, locked the door, and rode the elevator back down. When we got to the desk, the girl at the front asked how everything was. I told her it wasn't a hotel room, so obviously not good. She looked confused so I showed her the key and explained what happened. She said that can't be right because that key was to the room she gave us. I insisted it was not. Now I'm getting a little upset because at this point it's like 2 o'clock in the morning. I asked to speak with a manager. This is when I learned it was no longer a hotel. Somehow the booking website we used had incorrect information. It was someone's air B and B. The manager confirmed that the place we walked into was someone's home. My question is, how does a home just not have locks? But that's a different story.

I demanded a refund, explaining that I specifically booked a hotel. They let us stay at the hotel for free, even though it wasn't their fault. I actually felt bad for the girl. She was new and didn't know the hotels had changed. The people at the hotel were very nice and we got a nice room and some snacks. The following morning we went to the car and the battery was dead. Not just dead, completely dead. It could've been the cold, but who knows? We were just glad we ended up staying at the hotel because if we continued to drive we may have been stranded. We got the car jumped, charged the battery, and went on our way.
