Never call a man a liar

My ex used to lie a LOT. He even told me once that his friend was dead and he would always attend his friends birthday party. One year his friend forgot to invite my ex so he told him he didn't believe in celebrating birthdays (which he had done for the past three years). He only admitted it was a lie when I asked him why he didn't go to his friends birthday party this year.

When I would confront him about his lies he would get extremely defensive. He would tell me that he was telling the truth (even though I would catch him in his lie) and a few days later tell me he lied. Sometimes he would even insist that he didn't say something when I was 100% sure he did say it. I'm not sure if he ever intentionally lied to cover up other lies but I'm sure that is what happened in some cases.

I don't really blame him for not wanting to admit to lying because it can hurt his ego to admit to it. But it's better for him to admit to lying than to repeatedly insist he wasn't lying when he was.
