The best way to use flashcards is to put them in a pile with the flashcard with the prompt facing up and the flashcard with the answer facing down. You should flip over the flashcard and look at the answer. If you know it or recognize it, you put it to the left of the pile. If you do not recognize it or do not remember it, you put it to the right. That way if you put it to the left and it turns out you actually don't remember it but you were just confused you can move it to the right and review it again. This way you don't have to flip through a lot of cards you recognize or you do remember.

Another approach is to put the cards on the desk in front of you and move to the left if you know and to the right if you don't know. This is better than the first approach because it saves time having to actually move the cards.

Instead of using cards you could draw squares on a sheet of paper and write the questions on the left and the answers on the right. This also has the advantage that you can use page protectors to keep them clean, something you cannot do with physical cards. This also has the advantage that you can zoom in on them to make them bigger on your phone.
