My girlfriend (27f) said she wasn’t going to get a Christmas tree because I (27m) wasn’t going to see it enough to make it worth it. I thought this was a bit of a jerk move so I got one and decorated it while she was out.

I live 20 minutes away from my girlfriend and I spend most nights at her house. Sometimes, she’ll call me and say that she’s being lazy and is going to stay home.

She suggested that since I don’t spend all nights with her, the tree will be unattended some nights and she won’t bother to put one up.

I thought that was a bit of a jerk thing to say, I understand where she’s coming from, but she doesn’t have to sound so dismissive when she says it.

So, I wanted to play a little prank on her so I went to Walmart and bought the biggest tree they had, lights, tinsel, ornaments, and cut it while I was still in the parking lot.

I arrived at her house, while throwing the tree up her driveway. She had left her door unlocked so I set up the tree and everything in her living room. Then I left the house.

When she got home she’ll see the tree and find me note saying it will always be attended because it’s at her house. She’ll then realize she has to either drag it to the trash, or let it die over the next few weeks.

After she came home, she called me and asked why there was a dead tree in her house. I told her that I felt it would be wrong to keep a tree from a good home. She asked me how I got into her house to which I responded that I walked in. She then pressed me on if I had a key or not. I finally admitted that I didn’t have a key, but the door was unlocked.

She told me that she was okay with me having a key to her house, but she did not want me walking in on her or entering the house without her knowledge. I told her I understood completely.

I then offered to help drag the tree to the dumpster. She told me that I was going to have to drag it myself because she was home by 5:30 and I didn’t get there to 8:30. She thought that was the least I could do after violating her privacy the way I did.

While I was dragging the tree, she told me over the phone that she understood that I was playing a joke on her, but she felt like I had violated her trust and privacy, especially since I had to move her couch and chair in order to put the tree in the living room. She said she understands that I can’t fit a tree through her front door, and that I can’t move the tree alone and expected help from someone else.

In conclusion, I learned to never violate someone’s privacy, even if I’m trying to play a joke on them.
