A few years ago, I accidentally knocked over my vacuum cleaner when I was vacuuming the stairs and broke the belt. I tried to fix it, but ended up getting frustrated and calling a repair service to take a look at it.

I was going out of town for a week or two and when I came back, the repairman had not only changed the belt, but also replaced the motor because it was “bad”. Knowing little to nothing about vacuum cleaners, I trusted his assessment and paid for the repair. The repair ended up costing over $200.

When I got home and started vacuuming, I noticed the vacuum cleaner was a lot more difficult to maneuver and the suction power was less than it was before. I figured it was because of my lack of usage, but I really have no idea.

Fast forward to a few weeks ago, my vacuum cleaner started smoking like crazy. I saw some posts in this sub that advised me to check the filter and the belt, but my filter was clean and my belt was fine. I’m starting to believe that the repairman fucked up the repair and stupidly charged me for a faulty repair.

I thought I’d let it go and just deal with the smoke until it broke down completely and I’d have to replace it.

However, I’m moving into a new place in a few weeks and I was dreading lugging that heavy vacuum cleaner up the stairs and I did not want to spend my small savings on a new one (I was thinking about Dyson, because that’s literally the only brand I know).

Then, I saw this post on this sub about a cheap vacuum cleaner this guy bought for under $70 and I was so inspired by it that I decided to look for a cheap vacuum cleaner too. I settled for this cheap Shark model that looked like a Dyson. It was only $30.

It works PERFECTLY and it’s so much lighter and easier to maneuver. It’s also a lot quieter and does not smoke at all.

Thank you, Reddit. You guys saved me literally THOUSANDS of dollars.

Edit: look y’all this is my first Chambers post. I was excited and wanted to share. I wasn’t expecting this many responses. So thank you so much for your kind words and additional tips!
