Idea: app that stops you from checking work emails at home

Don’t know how strong of an need for this there is. Certainly used it.

I’d love if there was an app that blocks work emails for a certain period. Obviously the need for this is subjective, but I think there’s a fair bit of science behind the idea of taking a break from something to be able to focus when you are working (e.g., breaks at school).

So this app would do like freedom or website blockers do, but it’d block your work email, which I assume could be hard to do in some cases (e.g., if your company doesn’t let you).

Very rough details:

* you choose your email address (google, outlook, whatever) and the time period you want to block it
* before the blocking starts, it gives you some kind of code - you keep this safe
* during the period you set, you can’t check work emails
* you can’t change the period until it’s over
* if you try to open your work email, it’ll give you a message that the app is blocking it, and give you a chance to give the code if you want to change the period

Maybe the app would require you to choose to only use it for personal emails (i.e., not work emails).

I can’t see how it’d work for those companies that use a custom email app, or just a browser for email.

I think part of the reason this might not exist is that of course people can still choose to check work emails at home if they want. But if the app blocks work emails, the idea is that it’s like when they tell you at night to put your phone in another room - that you can still look at your email if you want, but you have to go to the trouble of getting out of bed, going to the other room, etc. In this case you’d have to get on your computer, find the code, put it in, etc., which is enough that it would stop you.

•
Post your app ideas, get feedback or get "stolen".
