The Food and Drug Administration approved two medications on Friday in the largest advancement in sickle cell disease treatment in nearly three decades.<br><br>Mitapivat, which will be sold under the brand name Pyrukynd, reduces the severity and frequency of pain crises often associated with the disease, a condition that affects an estimated 100,000 Americans, predominantly Black people.<br><br>The second drug, voxelotor, will be sold under the brand name Oxbryta and increases the amount of hemoglobin in patient’s blood, also reducing the severity and frequency of the pain crises, often associated with the disease, a condition that affects an estimated 100,000 Americans, predominantly Black people. <br><br>Even though there are a couple treatments for SCD, there is not currently a cure. <br><br>Chambers, why did it take almost 25 years for any new sickle cell disease treatments to be approved?<br><br>Edit: I have been getting requests for post genres.
