how tf do you call someone 'friend' when you don't even know their name

i’ve seen a lot of comments about how names are ‘not important’ to a lot of people.. how tf am i supposed to know i don’t know someone’s name when i call them friend? i’ve never been able to grasp this.. i always ask people if i dont know their name.. seems like basic info to me?
