How to not give money to homeless?

I’m going on a vacation to New York and everyone says that I should be careful about homeless people. I’m not from America and it would be the first time to see homeless people in my life. I want to know how can I identify them and how to protect myself from them. If someone could share experiences on how to not give any money to them it would help me a lot.
