Why do people buy an expensive bed?

I'm shocked at how expensive some beds can be. A fellow at work bought an expensive Casper mattress he really likes. Then I stumbled upon Purple mattresses that are "smart" and cost almost $10,000. I'm trying to understand why people think this is a good idea. It's not like they are the most well-made mattresses. They're all made of cheap plastic and foam that will be garbage in a few years.

I'm also reading that people don't last the full warranty, and the resale value is like any other piece of furniture.

My weekend adventure was a trip to the mattress store in my town, and the cheapest mattress was about $500. I ended up getting it and I think it's by far the best mattress I've ever slept on. I have a hard time understanding why someone would spend a lot on a bed.

Is the sleep quality really that much better?
