Why do people still claim Israel is just “defending” itself?

While that does make sense to me in some cases when the attacks came in from uncontrolled Palestinian territories like Gaza, recently it doesn’t make sense at all. When they’re committing mass arrests, raids, evictions and forced expulsions using these terror attacks as a pretext, what do you mean they’re just defending themselves? Israel is only compounding the violence here…
