I’m an American who has been living in Europe for several years, and I’ve spent a lot of time traveling here. I’ve noticed a trend of posts on this sub where people are scared to travel to other countries because of things they’ve seen in the US. Examples of this are<br><br>- A post asking if it was okay to wear sports bra in public at the pool. The comments were like “depends on the country. I got in trouble for it in Italy once.” And I’m like, I’m literally German, I can speak for Germany. Nobody cares if you wear a sports bra at the pool. It’s fine. <br><br>- A post asking if it was okay to wear shorts in public and the first comment was “it depends on the location, but personally I don’t wear shorts outside my house. It’s not worth it, people will stare and I don’t want to make anyone uncomfortable” And I’m like, nobody cares if you wear shorts. Nobody. Especially not at the pool. <br><br>- A post like this one, asking if anyone has ever been groped/sexually assaulted at the pool. And the first comment was “as a man, I never cared if someone groped me at the pool. I do care about unwanted staring.” Like, sir, I think you would care if someone groped you at the pool. That’s an attack on a man’s honor, and I don’t want that to happen to anyone. <br><br>And so on. I can’t say anything about other continents, I’ve only been to Europe and north Africa, but I’ve never had this sort of thing happen to me and I doubt you will either. If you want to go travel somewhere cool, just do it. <br><br>Edit: I’m sorry if this came off as kinda snarky, I’m just tired of Americans being afraid to go on trips because they think the rest of the world is as volatile as the US. I do acknowledge that there are some cultural differences and I’m glad there’s discourse and people are planning to travel and asking about the places they want to go to. My main point is, the rest of the world isn’t as scary as USA. Please go travel if you can :)
