Cooking a steak every day for meal prep, what’s wrong with my technique

I’m an amateur cook. I’m looking for ways to improve my steak cooking skills. So I cook a steak a day. I’m currently working on that skill.

I season steaks with salt and pepper, sometimes parsley. I tried some butter on a couple of them, but I don’t really like buttered steak. I cook them on stovetop grills (cast iron) until it’s to my liking. I cook on a 8 setting (out of 10) which is just below the max setting.

Today I cooked a steak with salt, pepper, and parsley. I cooked it on both sides for maybe 5 minutes max and it was cooked throughout when I checked it. It was a thicker steak.

I also did the same with another steak that was thinner and it came out burnt. Maybe I cooked it too long.

I’m not sure how to have a sear on both sides and still be cooked at the right level (I like it well done). What I’ve been trying to do is move the skillet around to let the steak get a sear in different parts of the pan. This seems to have lower quality results and doesn’t seem like a good technique.

Is there better ways to cook a steak or ways to improve?

What I think I need to improve on is temperature and time.
