I never understood this “I’m only getting my tubes tied cuz the courthouse is 3 hours away from my house” nonsense

I’ve heard a lot of women say this. I got my tubes tied in October 2020, the only thing I had to do was sign a document, toget my tubes tied. I’ve never heard of having to go to the courthouse to get it done. I’m in the US, was it different here in the past?
