I just don't understand

I don't get why the entire internet is shitting on "catgirls" (I'm sure I'm not alone) I can't help but feel like the entire thing is a giant joke. I, personally, don't think the term "catgirl" has any meaning as it's been used ironically so much. I don't understand why people are suddenly shitting on catgirls after a decade of it just being a meme and why the internet is suddenly so divided on the issue. It's really baffling to see people from other fandoms using it as an excuse to shit on anime. People will get mad or say that it doesn't matter, but I don't really understand how to feel about the situation. I don't really know if I should stop enjoying the things I enjoy or not.
