Can you guys help an Aussie buy an AR? I've made a poor choice in citizenship

So I've made the mistake of living in Australia and I really really want an AR15. Now I know these are banned in Australia but I plan on spending 5 more years here then heading to the states. I've heard that these things can be customised to be almost anything the heart desires and so I want to get into the hobby. Is there a way I can buy an AR and have it shipped to a friend in the US to store until I get there? Would a store ship to a relative's address? Any advice would be awesome. Thanks guys
