On average we sleep 1 hour less than our grandparents. I know that I can tell a huge difference when I get at least 7 hours of sleep vs 6 hours.

Sleeping more seems to improve your memory, concentration, and overall well-being. Most people sleep 6 hours, but need to sleep for 8 or 9.

Also, the whole 8 hours a night thing isn’t true for everyone. There are some people who are short sleepers, they can sleep for 4 hours a night and they are fine for the rest of their lives.

Also, there’s something call polyphasic sleep, where you sleep for 4 hours every 12 hours. I tried it, it didn’t work out for me, but it’s an interesting concept.

Having too much caffeine and artificial lights at night also really affect sleep. Blue light blocking glasses did nothing for me, but I can’t drink caffeine after 3 pm and be able to sleep.
