It's not about the money, but the money is ALWAYS about the money

I just wanted to throw some of my two cents having stayed in over 200 hotels across over 50 countries.

I have meet many, many people across the globe who have been working in the industry - many of their stories have been 'I've always loved hotels/travel, so I thought I would give it a shot!'. However, many of those stories have also been 'I love it, but I already regret it'. I have meet so many people who have quit to go work in different industries who have said 'I didn't know I was going to be treated like that, I really thought I was doing something good'.

First, travel is amazing, but it is also a very, very profitable industry. I can almost promise that people in the tourism industry are making more money off your average tourist than those in the healthcare industry are making off their average patient.

Second, you are a dollar sign and a bed night. The industry doesn't like you. The hospitality industry does not like you. You are a necessary evil, and nothing more. The most valuable thing you can do is spending money on site at their bar/restaurant. This is a 'because you have to' industry. They know you need a place to sleep, they know you need a place to eat, and they know you need a way to travel. While there are certainly kind, caring, and good people in the industry, they are quickly weeded out by those who want to exploit for the sake of profit.

Lastly, do not give your money to large companies. Saw this on a post earlier today and it really resonated with me. A large hotel chain is not your friend. They more than likely are not even in the hospitality industry for the 'right reasons' (your money is their reason). They are not good to their employees and they are not good to their environment. The super cool, small, boutique hotels, hostels, etc are.

Do not be a hotel snob. They don't like you.
