Does the phrase “I do it for me” actually make sense for women when it comes to their bodies, beauty, and sex?

Hello. I just can’t seem to make sense of that phrase when used by women to describe why they get plastic surgery, why they’re promiscuous, or why they spend so much time on their appearance. I’m not trying to be offensive here and just want to know why they say that and what they mean. I’m assuming they don’t just say that to sound cool or satisfy men.

Let’s say there’s this woman named “K”. I’m sure K knows that there is a physical/visual double standard. In other words, women are more selective of men’s bodies than vice versa. K also knows that men expect certain things when it comes to women’s bodies and women’s sex lives.

Let’s also say K is someone who has been hurt in the past by men, particularly because of her appearance. K feels unattractive and hurt, so she decides to get plastic surgery to feel better. That’s totally valid and I’m not questioning that. I would just like to know what “I do it for me” really means in that context, since I’m just trying to understand why K would choose to get surgery in order to feel better.

I feel like saying things like “I do it for me” dismisses the fact that our society is so obsessed with beauty and that women are subjected to unreasonable beauty expectations. In my opinion, if K decided to get plastic surgery because she knows that society expects that of her as a woman, then she’s still doing it for them. If K knows men don’t like small boobs, small butts, stretch marks, and cellulite, then she’s still doing it for them.

Let’s also say there’s this man named “B” who feels the need to buy a brand new car because he knows his friends will love the car. He justifies buying that car by saying he does it for himself. Is that really true? It’s possible but not really. B knows that his friends love that car, and that’s why he’s doing it. He might be doing it for himself and for his friends, but he’s still doing it for them.
