Being a professional Worldbuilder

Hello I'm 21, I study Spatial Planning at the unversity, have worked on 3 projects in building projects in Architecture and plan to work in Urban planning. I could work in public administration, with construction companies or freelance.

I am a roleplayer, and today my DM has an idea to create a "board game", as he calls it, a very long campaign. So, as inspiration for his world, we have decided to create a world together as he has so many projects in mind and he wanted to give his vision to the public and not keep it to himself. Obviously the vision he shared is the one of a fantasy world, so the ideas we are sharing are based on the ones of the world we are creating together.

We are a party of 7 people and we are starting from a big world, so we have divided it in regions. Each one of us has an area and we have to create a map. Not any map, but as realistic as possible.

So to make them as realistic as possible we are using real maps as reference and we are basing our map in it. For example I am doing a map that is based on Colombia, although right now I am studying how real mountains are formed and the shapes they take, to give the mountains in my map a more realistic shape.

So to my question. Do you believe that a professional worldbuilder could be a thing? Is realistic worldbuilding just a hobby or could it be a job, and even a career path? Do you know of a professional worldbuilder or case when a professional worldbuilder has been hired to create a world for a company or could you imagine the professional worldbuilders being contracted to create a world for a company and them hiring experts in geology or biology to help create the world?

I'd love to know what you think of it.

P.D. My apologies if this has been a stupid question.
