How do you tell your girlfriend at 16 that you aren't going to be around long enough to go to prom?

My friend is 16 and says he has terminal brain cancer and can't help but think those thoughts. He can't tell his girlfriend since she's already distraught that he's terminally ill and he doesn't want to ruin the time they have left together.
