But how, you ask? Well there's science behind it. There's this thing called the "facial feedback hypothesis". In short, if you smile, your brain will think that you're happy even when you're not. For example, if you're feeling sad, you can go in front of a mirror and make a happy face. It'll make you (feel) better. So, the next time you feel upset, try this. It won't make the problem go away, but it'll help you feel better. It reduces anxiety as well.
