[Discussion] But why do you oppose it?

While browsing other chambers in the wee hours of the morning and seeing the same sort of question pop up, something occurred to me. No matter the niche topic, no matter the platform, and even the niche topic, you can expect some variant of the following question to be asked.

But why do you oppose it?

Why don't you want to let the people engage in this thing they find pleasurable? Why do you deny them their most basic human right, the right to live their life how they see fit?

Usually, the terms in which the question is framed are somewhat like:

*"I don't understand why this is a big issue for you, those with this preference want to do \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_, its not affecting you, so why are you getting so mad about it. Is it hurting you in any way? Is it harming you?"*

Pretty reasonable question, right? But to me, this seems to encourage people to focus too much on what is actually being argued for or against, rather than what this change in reality would mean for the individual asking the question. So I'd like to flip this question around and ask the other side: Why do you support it? Why do you want \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_? I know you aren't hurting anything and it isn't your fault that I don't fully understand your viewpoint, but why do you really want this?

We don't ask this question as much because it can come off as more confrontational, but I don't see why that has to be the case. It doesn't have to be like that. By asking people why they support something, we can get a more complete picture of what is motivating them to support that particular thing. By talking to people that both support and oppose the subject, we can gain an understanding of the viewpoints that each side holds. Why they want it, why they don't want it, and we can make an informed decision and increase our understanding of those around us.
