One of my students might be being abused

I am a female sixth grade English teacher in the United States. One of my students is an English language learner from Ukraine. He recently wrote a fictional story for me where the dad hits the son for not doing his chores and the son is so upset he wishes he didn't have a dad or a mom. This has left me disturbed and feeling like I need to do something because I have heard abuse stories before and I feel like this might be what's going on in my student's home. What should I do to help my student?<br><br>&#x200B;<br><br>EDIT: I have to give out progress reports this week to anyone whose grade is below a C. His grades are low so I am going to have a conversation with him and his mom about his grades after school and see if I can get any clues about the situation. I might also let the school counselor know because she has been in education for 30 years and she might have dealt with a case like his before. The mom does not speak a lot of English and the dad speaks even less.
