My mom is 77 years old and has two kids, my brother (43) and me. We both live in the USA and my brother has two girls ages 3 & 5. My mom is retired and lives in Central America (I'll just say it's a Spanish speaking country for the sake of this post).

She had a small business for the last 10 years that was a childrens play place. She's very smart and the business was thriving throughящ all her hard work and dedication coupled with the support of her family.

The business was thriving until the pandemic and government restrictions forced her to close permanently. The good news is that the business was debt free but my mom had to pay out around $100,000 to terminate employee contracts, pay lawyers to navigate the whole process, etc. It was a nightmare that really took a toll on her.

Fast forward to now, and my mom is being sued by the owner of the property the business was in. We just received news yesterday that she is being sued for $288,000 for supposedly breaking her commercial lease/contract and not paying for all the months that the business was closed due to COVID lockdowns.

Obviously, $288,000 would completely ruin her. We all pool our money together every month to send her money and cover her living expenses because she lost her only income when the business went under but at least she had her savings. Now all of that would just go to pay this lawsuit and she would be left with nothing.

My brother and I have been racking our brains but we can't come up with that kind of cash. We're both in shock and stunned. We thought the business was fully closed and that she could finally relax, but the aftermath of the business closing is still ongoing.

Honestly, I don't even know where to begin. Is this something she can fight? Are there any commercial lease lawyers that can give us advice? It seems crazy that she would have to pay nearly $300,000 for a business that is no longer in operation due to a worldwide pandemic that caused small businesses to close all around the world. Is it just a lost cause? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Please note I'm just trying to get advice in order to help my mom. I can't give out more information than I already have but any advice would be greatly appreciated.
