What is it about minimalism that is so unappealing to people nowadays?

I understand that there is a time and a place for minimalism, but it seems like many people (especially younger people and zoomers) are going more towards a maximalist type living situation and that just seems so odd to me. It almost seems like a joke that people like to talk about how hard it is to live with empty spaces and how sad it is to not have a bunch of clutter on shelves and hanging from walls.

What is it about not having a ton of clutter and stuff everywhere that is not taking a liking to so many people?
