Can I get in trouble for voicing my political opinion at work?

I am an intern in the editorial department of a newspaper. I am a college student and I am not being paid but I am being given experience/credits.

I am Hispanic I have visited the border and I am very passionate about immigration issues and on the topic of the wall. I have never voiced my opinion of anything political in the workplace except for the topic of the wall.

I do have a good friendship with the editor of the newspaper and we chat in the morning about the news and current events. He is open with his political opinions and he is conservative and I am liberal. So he knows my stance on many issues but we never let it come in the way of our work.

But on this topic I haven’t expressed just my opinion, I have expressed data and statistics. I don’t argue with anyone about it and it is not my goal to get anyone mad. I don’t even bring up the topic. If someone else does then I give my opinion and I back it up with evidence.

The reason I have expressed my opinion more on this topic is because I have found out that a lot of people in the office, including the editor, are against letting migrants enter the country at all because of their status. I have explained what the difference between migrants and undocumented immigrants is but they just say that there is no way to determine the girls/boys that are actually migrants and will just lie and say they are migrants to get in.

I expressed my opinion again recently and one of the editors approached me after work and asked me to be more careful. I asked him what he meant and he told me that my political opinions were not welcomed there and that if the owner of the newspaper found out I might not be welcomed back.

I don’t want to just not express myself politically but I don’t want to lose my internship either. Should I keep expressing myself politically or should I shut up now?
