Google has started testing end-to-end encryption for group chats in Messages, according to a support page updated by the tech giant. Once enabled, this feature will offer users more privacy by ensuring only the sender and the recipient can view the content of a message.

The rollout is expected to happen in open beta, although a specific timeline hasn’t been confirmed. Google also plans to bring this feature to Google Messages on the web and other clients, so you won’t be limited to the Android version. Users will be able to initiate group conversations with up to 21 participants and switch between SMS and RCS (Rich Communication Services) in a chat thread.

The company has mentioned that it’s working on notifying users which type of message is being sent across the thread. Let’s hope it’s implemented correctly and doesn’t cause confusion among users, especially while communicating in group chats.
