I had to be escorted by 30 police after walking too far from my hotel in Dubai.

I'm an Aussie and had never been to the Middle East. It was very hot and didn't really know what to expect.

I was staying at the Marina Hotel and had been kept up all night from jet lag. I was staying with a mate on the 40th floor and we stood looking out at the marina and thought it looked too cool, so thought fuck it and decided to walk there.

I had a little pair of shorts and a white t shirt on. We started walking and after about 15 mins we were stopped by something like the harbour master. He asked where we were going and we said we wanted to walk to the marina. We were immediately told to stop by a bunch of security guards who said we couldn't walk there and that we should get an Uber. We said we were happy to walk and it wasn't very far. After a bit of back and forth they radioed for backup because we looked to out of place.

After around 10 minutes 3 police cars pulled up, and two of them got out, and started asking us questions about why we were so far from our hotel. We explained the same thing, that we wanted to walk to the marina because it looked nice. He asked if we had ever been to Dubai before and we said no, and he told us we can't walk that far from our hotel, it was too hot and not safe for us. We were eventually put in the back of a police car and driven back to the hotel with a police car in front and one behind.

This whole time we are thinking this is insane, but didn't want to get in trouble. When we arrived at the hotel the concierge stepped out and asked what had happened, he explained that it isn't safe for tourists to walk far, that we are more likely to get heat stroke or robbed. He said it is our fault for not researching the place before coming.

We didn't even get a warning, but it was so surreal and crazy that we just wrote it off as the Dubai experience. I'll probably never forget it.

Edit - A lot of commenters are dubai residents. I didn't know I would have so many readers from here. I visited years ago, and since then I've learned a lot about Dubai. I don't think I'll go back.
