One thing that would really help my fellow Americans is if they stopped asking me to do accents

I’m an American guy who has finally escaped the US by moving to Australia.

I’ve been here for about 2 months and I’ve met a lot of people who speak Irish, English, New Zealander, Aussie, etc… accents. I’ve always found the Irish accent to be the most interesting and I love to listen to them talk. I’ve always thought that it’d be amazing to be able to do accents.

Yesterday, I had a very nice conversation with my neighbors, who are Irish. It was lovely. They were kind, I was interested, all was good. Today, I met another Irish couple. The wife had never met me and the husband wasn’t around, so of course she asks “where are you from”. I tell her, she says “yeah I like Americans but I don’t like that accent”. I explain that I know a little Irish and I love it, especially the accent. She says “you can speak it?” And I’m like “well not really”.

So she says “do the accent for me”.

I try. I fail. It’s embarrassing and I feel stupid.

We are all human and we all have flaws and strengths. I suck at accents. I’m bad with sounds. I’m good at other things - and should be judged on an entire list of skills and not just one.

It’s embarrassing. It’s enough that people hate my accent, I don’t need to be judged for something I’m bad at as well.
