Why do I keep hearing about Japan’s high suicide rates?

I’ve heard about Japan’s high suicide rate multiple times before but it never really clicked with me. I live in the US and I’ve never heard about a country with the same level of severity that suicide is such a common thing in a country, to the point where it is just a known fact. Why does it keep coming up in conversation and why is it so bad?
