I'm a 41MF single Dad to a 7 year old girl, Katy.

My brother 'Tony' 41 and I are close, and we see each other often. He has 3 boys, 9, 7 and 5.

The boys are quite close in age and also physically and developmentally advanced for their age due to my brother being a ex professional athlete, so they are often mistaken for being older.

On school holidays, they want to play contact sports, and are very good at them.

Katy is not.

Tony's kids often complain when they have to include Katy in their games.

They can also be quite rough and over competitive, which is a turn off for Katy.

Tony and I have tried to explain to his kids how hurtful this is for her.

They have apologised, but don't seem to care too much.

Tony and I were discussing plans for the school holidays and he said that he was taking the boys to an indoor sports centre for a day of basketball etc.

He invited Katy too, but she said she would rather stay home with me.

I planned on taking her to the cinema for the afternoon.

Tony's kids were pissed at this, they want to go to the movies too.

Tony offered to buy their tickets, I said I was happy to take them but running it past the kids first.

The kids were adamant that they wanted to play sports.

When Tony and the kids left, I asked Katy again if she would like to go.

She said yes, and thanked me.

Tony called me later to say his kids were upset, as they assumed that I would be staying home with them still.

I explained to Tony that I asked Katy multiple times to make sure she wanted to go, and she said she did.

Before Tony left, the kids knew that we were going to the movies, we didn't barge in on them or ruin their plans, and they said they didn't want to go.

Tony said that his kids are upset and that I should have stayed home.

He has since offered to buy their tickets twice, and both Katy and I have refused.

His kids have told some other people in our circle that I'm a jerk for leaving them out, which isn't true.

Tony and I aren't speaking at the moment, so I'm here to see if I was AH for taking Katy to the cinema?

I think I'm NTA and the kids are playing the victim.

UPDATE- I didn't end up going to the movies with Katy.

An old friend from high school got in touch.

He and his wife are divorced but remain friends, they have a daughter around Katy's age, and the girl's don't get to see each other often.

Katy was thrilled to be able to sees her friends.

Tony and I also got a chance to talk with a clear head.

We are both pretty sick of the kids throwing a tantrum when things don't go their way.
