What was the attitude of people in China towards Mao Zedong during the Cultural Revolution? Especially after the Lin Biao incident?

I’m certain that after the Lin Biao incident, there must have been tons of doubts and second thoughts about Mao among ordinary people. But I found very few on record. For example, many people when reflecting on the period of time would always say that they believed Mao was a great leader and that it was the Gang of Four who was responsible for the mess. But I think this is probably just post facto interpretations. And I’ve also heard that there were big character posters criticizing Mao, but these are probably exceptions rather than the rule. I would be very grateful if you point me to some sources or tell me your own perspective on this
