The Security Council is currently voting whether to not to allow Palestine to become a UN member state. Is this right? (This thread was locked on account of the mod team, for the following reason and will be reopened in 24 hours on 17/02/2012.)

The Security Council is currently in the middle of voting whether or not to allow Palestine to become a full member state of the UN. This vote will be the first of several votes that Palestine will have to go through. I think this is wrong because it is unfair to force a group of people to have to seek the permission of other nations to be recognized as a sovereign nation state. Shouldn't Palestine have the right to be recognized as a sovereign state without having to go through the approval process of the UN? Shouldn't this be a right that every nation state has?

Edit: The vote has ended and Palestine have gained the votes to proceed to the next round, which is the General Assembly. However, the US has stated that they will veto any attempt of Palestine to become a member state at the General Assembly, effectively ending any chance of Palestine becoming a member state in the near future.

Edit: As it turns out, Palestine will not need the approval of the General Assembly nor the Security Council as they are applying to be a "non-member observer state". This means that they will only need a majority vote to become a member state. 9 countries have voted no, one has abstained and the rest have voted yes. So it is certain that Palestine will become a non-member observer state.
