# Edit: Wow! I did NOT expect this kind of response!

You all have given me a lot to think about and consider. I think the best way for me to reply to all of you is to put my thoughts and feelings into words and then post those words here. I will do this after my lunch and cool down from the emotions this post has stirred up in me.

Thank you all so much. You have charged my mind and heart!

-------------------------------------------

# Original post:

Hi all. I've been reading this sub for a little while now and I have to say I REALLY appreciate those who are willing to at least hear out others opinions and see if they can find common ground.

Let me first describe what I mean by "systemic" racism:

This is when seemingly neutral policies or laws or actions are enacted or taken that disproportionately affect a particular race in a positive or negative way.

Example: Cash bail. A white person is more likely to be able to bail themselves out than a black person, thus the cash bail system disproportionately affects blacks in a negative way.

Example: Lower interest rates for blacks looking to buy homes. This would disproportionately affect blacks in a positive way.

I have been to a few dozen black majority cities. (Detroit, Saint Louis, Memphis, Philly, Baltimore, Oakland, LA, Gary, Chicago, Milwaukee, ATL, HARLEM NY)

A few hispanic cities ( San Diego, Los Angeles, Fresno, Albuquerque, Miami)

And a couple of Asian cities ( San Francisco, New York City)

These cities have majority minority populations and are run by mostly minorities. The Police departments are run by chiefs of their races, and the police officers reflect the racial makeup of the city.

I have never encountered racism when I go into a store. I have never seen a sign on a water fountain or elevator or park bench that indicated it was for a specific race. I have never been denied a services based on my race. I have never encountered a single racial barrier in any of my travels (over 150,000 miles!)

I believe most people are like me: We don't care what color your skin is. You're a human, we treat you as you treat us, like another human. Humans are good. Humanity is good.

I've heard that the justice system is racist because blacks are more likely to be arrested and convicted, thus making up a larger percentage of prisoners. But that is half the picture. The prosecutors and judges and police chiefs and mayors are all elected and appointed by the citizens of these cities. The police departments of these cities reflect the racial makeup of the citizens of these cities.

Therefore, these cities are run mostly by people of color, and people of color are convicting people of color. The justice system in these places is run by people of color. So if the justice system is racist, it must be people of color being racist against people of color. Not white people being racist against people of color.

I believe most cities are like the cities I've been to.

But I do understand that "most" does not mean "all".

I am willing to be wrong here. I am wanting to be wrong. Show me I am wrong, and I will immediately change my mind!

Edit: Formatting
