If you follow r/worldbuilding, then it's somewhat obvious that there have been issues brewing in the past month or so with regards to the moderation and how it's perceived by the community.

There's been a fair amount of comments and posts about it, so i'm not going to repeat what's been said here. Essentially, what happened is that one of our moderators has been removed by Chambers administrators as part of a broader action.

It's not very clear to me what exactly happened, and that's not surprising. Moderators are usually not told the details of such events. The only thing that i can tell is that this is the first time that i have to deal with such an event, and it's a clear sign that things are not going well within the community.

As moderators, we are so used to focusing on ensuring that our members are safe and that they feel welcome here, that i think that we've forgotten how to do that for some of our own members. Moderators have to put up with difficult situations and difficult users, and that's something that we volunteer for. Still, i'm not sure that we're doing a good job at supporting our own moderators, and that's the real issue here. Not whether Chambers has removed someone or not. It's whether we have failed one of our moderators.

One thing that i think we've done wrong in the past years is to attract new moderators that don't share the same vision of what the community is about. We've always been a very open and diverse community, and this is something that we cherish. There's value in having moderators that have different approaches to the job, but there's also a risk in having moderators that want to change how the community operates. We've clearly not been good at avoiding that, and that's lead to conflicts with some of our members.

What that means for the future, i don't know. Everything is still very recent, and we're not talking much about it. One thing that we've done is to remove any rule that is contentious. We're not removing rules because moderators have been removed. We're removing rules because they've been contentious.

I'm not going to discuss the rules in this post, because this is not really about rules. It's about people. It's about building a space that is safe and fun for everyone. Right now, it's not. And that's on us. We need to change that.

Edit:

For those asking, i won't confirm or deny that the moderator who was removed was u/ThaneTheBane2. Chambers administrators don't tell us about these events. I can just look at our current moderators and see who's missing. As such, i cannot confirm this. I don't know anything about it, and even if i did, i wouldn't tell you.

Edit 2:

In order to alleviate any valid concerns, i will be making another announcement in the coming days about who is currently moderating the community, and who is not. As you know, we do not discuss our internal affairs, because we do not want to create any conflicts within the community. Still, given the concerns that are raised by some of you, i think that this is needed.
