I once met a successful businesswoman in her mid 30s who claimed she lived in her car for years and was almost homeless because she had money issues. Her only problem is that the 3 bedroom house her father left her was too expensive to keep and she claims she downgraded to a 2 bedroom house .

this is my first comment ever in this sub. I'm a man of few words so excuse me if I deviate. I'm from a latin american country. Essentially I was recovering from an alcoholic binge when I met this woman who had to be in her mid 30s. She was from a decent background (her father was some type of government employee, I really don't remember the specifics) and was born in the city I reside in. She said that she used to live in our town not so long ago (like 4/5 years ago) but moved to a nearby town when her father passed away. She was a very nice woman, I was very hungover and she even got me a meal. She has 1 child, a teenage girl if I recall correctly.

She then told me that she had lived in her car for a long time and that it's the reason why she didn't want her daughter to know about her situation (she also claimed that it's why she doesn't use her facebook profile anymore). I'm from a small town and I didn't want to pry so I just listened to what she had to say. She said that her dad left her a 3 bedroom house, a house that I'm familiar with. The house was on a 3 floor building in the center of the town. We have a lot of tourism in my country so I'm guessing that was the reason why she wanted to rent the house out (I have a feeling she bought an apartment in the city and that's where her and her daughter really live). She said that she had to sell the house because she was broke and that she now lives in a 2 bedroom house that is also down the street from my house (I live in an apartment 2 streets away from where she claims to live). My town is really small and I didn't want to ask unnecessary questions but I was really intrigued by her story. I didn't know what to make of it but I'm sure that she was lying about her past. I've lived in this town my whole life and I can't recall anyone living in their car on the streets for years, especially not a woman. Of course this might change in the near future, but I remember the town being relatively prosperous despite being poor. Our economy is centered around agriculture and the people who reside in the town have a lot of arable land filled with plantations of fruit and vegetables. The land is fertile and because of this a lot of residents own their houses and work on the land. Also despite being poor the town is relatively safe (yeah, there are some criminals and petty thieves but overall I feel safe walking alone at night) but it's not a place where you would feel comfortable leaving your car in the street overnight. I don't remember ever seeing a homeless person, and I've been in this town for 35 years.

I just find it weird that someone would lie about this topic. She was well educated, had a high paying job and seemed to be well off. But maybe I'm just a weirdo and I don't know how to socialize. I find it weird because she seemed to be a nice person, but I just can't understand why she would lie like that. Is it possible to live in your car on the outskirts of a small town for years and not be noticed? I'm not calling her a liar, but I find it weird that I have lived in the town for so long and I've never seen a car parked in the outskirts for years. This woman seemed to have a decent background, from what I understand not everyone from my town owns a house and land so I don't know why she wouldn't want to keep it. She bought another house in another town just 10 minutes away from where she was originally living so it wouldn't make sense to me from a financial standpoint if she was having money issues. This woman was working as a geometra, she wasn't a doctor but I'm sure she was paid fairly.

Am I being paranoid? Am I being a weirdo by thinking about this situation 6 years later? Has anyone ever heard a similar story?
