Discussing AGI in 2021 is like discussing The Internet in 1983.

Back in 1983 if you were interested in discussing the Internet, you had to join ARPA net which was only open to researchers affiliated with the US DOD, top researchers at some universities, and a few select defense contractors. If you were a regular person with no connections to the DOD, you wouldn’t even have known it existed. The DOD took the Internet project so seriously and had such a tremendous fear that this new tech might be exploited by the Russians that they made it a crime for any of the researchers or contractors working on the project to even discuss anything about the Internet with anyone that wasn’t cleared.

Fast forward to 2021 and we have a similar situation with AGI. If you are a top researcher at one of the big tech companies or a select few research universities, you are allowed to join the discussion of what AGI might look like when it is developed, when it might be developed, and what are some of the things we should start thinking about now to prepare for a world with AGI. If you are just a regular person, you are not cleared to even be a part of the discussion of AGI. You can only watch from afar as the select few begin to release carefully crafted public utterances about AGI. In reality however, just like the Internet, AGI is likely to become widespread and a part of everyday life for all non-AGI entities on the planet.

The future is coming.
