Something was off, so I didn't open the door

*UPDATE: I've been out of town for a while and didn't get back until 3 weeks ago. No further incidents with this man. I've also told my husband the whole story and he is still keeping a look out.*

I don't know what would have happened if I opened the door, but I know it wouldn't have been good.

We live in a 2 story townhouse with no working doorbell. Like it used to work, but one week it just stopped. So if someone is at the door, we need to hear them knock. I was in the master bedroom typing on my laptop when I heard someone knock at the door. Not weird, my husband was expecting a package, so I got up to get it.

Here's where it gets weird. As I was walking down the stairs to the front door, something told me to be careful; to not open the door. It was strange. I don't know why I felt that way, but I did. Instead of going straight to the door, I walked into the kitchen to look out the window to see who it was. There was a man I never saw before leaning against the door and smoking a cigarette. The way he was dressed and his posture and mannerisms just screamed "addict" to me. He looked to be in his 30s, with messy short black hair and a short beard. He was skinny and wore a black leather jacket and jeans. We have had issues with our neighbors inviting shady characters over before, so I knew this wasn't good.

He saw me looking at him through the kitchen window and waved me over. I don't know why, but the way he waved just seemed off and I was more convinced that I shouldn't open the door. I shook my head "no" at him and walked back into the master bedroom. There was no way I was going to open the door.

After 20 minutes of him knocking every so often and me hiding in the bedroom, he finally left. I went back to the kitchen to look out the window and saw him walking down the street. Then, I walked over to the front door to see if he left a note or a package. He didn't leave a note, and after looking through the peephole, I saw that what he left was a small bag of what looked like heroin. I was so glad that I didn't open the door. If I had, I'm positive that he would have tried to get in, and who knows what would have happened afterwards. I'm also thankful that my husband was at work, because if he opened the door, he would have fought the man, and that would not have ended well.

I realize this isn't a normal "let's not meet" story, but I wanted to tell it anyway. If I had opened the door, my story might have had a very different outcome.
