My wife lost her ring three days ago. It's the strangest thing.

My parents bought the ring for us when we decided to get married. I can't tell you exactly what kind it is, but I know my mom says the red stone is garnet and that the band is tin. It's not valuable, but it's pretty, and it was my wife's favorite thing. She wore it everywhere, to the point I used to tell her that it was a part of her.

A couple of weeks ago, we went camping for a few days, and she lost it.

"You know, I swear I had it when we were setting up the tent," she said.

"When did you take it off?"

"I don't know. But I don't think I did. I think it just fell off."

"Are you sure you didn't give it to me to hold and you forgot?"

"No, I didn't."

We searched the car and didn't find it. We searched the area where we were camping and didn't find it.

"I'm going to not sleep until I find it," my wife said.

"You'll just end up wanting an expensive replacement from a mall store that will make you miserable," her dad said.

"I want you to help me look for it," she said.

She got really upset when I wouldn't help her. Her dad did, though. He ripped apart all of our bags and searched the car. It was the first he had seen the ring, since we didn't have it for our wedding.

"I knew this would happen," he said.

"What?" I asked.

"I knew this would happen if she kept it for too long."

"Did she lose it?" I asked.

"No," he repeated. "I knew this would happen if she kept it for too long."

"We'll get her a new one," I said.

"No," he repeated. "I'm going to help her look for it."

He searched everything. I never would have guessed he could care so much about a stupid ring, but I guess it was sweet. I kind of thought it was what he wanted more than my wife did, but he eventually stopped.

"I have to admit defeat," he said.

"I'm going to keep looking," she said.

"I'm going to bed."

She was really upset that I would not help her search. It was like nothing else mattered. I was willing to help her for a minute, but she had been looking for days and would not stop. She went to bed and she wouldn't talk to me anymore.
