My mom divorced my dad when I was 3 years old. She didn't believe in badmouthing people. She just gave me and my sister a few rules. 1) We were never to be in a room alone with him and 2) We should never EVER tell him anything about our personal lives. My dad was a weird guy, so my sister and I were fine with these rules. My sister is 3 years older than me. She'd always complain about not have a normal dad, but I didn't know what that was like anyway. My mom married again when I was 10, and we moved to a new house.

She was a little worried that my dad would flip out, but he never did. He was a very quiet, quiet man. My stepdad is the most wonderful man in the world, so I basically took him as my father and ignored my real one.

So, all this is to explain why I didn't know my real dad had bought a house next door to ours. I was 14 before I found out.

At the time I was in highschool and I was spending a lot of time at my best friends house. Okay, time for a side story:

My best friend is named Courtney. She kind of reminds me of a character from a teen movie. The mean girl who turns into a nice girl. She was so very pretty, and she knew it. All the boys were crazy about her, and she used to take advantage of that.

Her parents were always out of town, too. They were professors who spent a lot of time doing research on Holiday Breaks. Courtney was secretly a very nice girl, and she was smart as hell. But she was afraid if she acted too nice or smart, she'd lose her popularity. It was a lot of pressure, but she dealt with it.

So, I was over at her house, and we were watching movies in her room. It was about 10 at night. I was going to go home around 11.

But then Courtney's phone started ringing. She looked at the number and frowned. "Don't answer it!" She said. A moment later it stopped, but started again. "Just answer it so it can stop." I said.

She answered, and I heard a male voice on the other end. I couldn't make out what he was saying, but it sounded angry. Courtney just listened and said "yes" over and over. A few more minutes passed, and she hung up. I asked her who it was, and she said it was her ex boyfriend.

Apparently his name was Mike, and they dated in grade school. He was really obsessed with her. I guess this was his number. He'd always text her and call her to make sure she was home. He'd threaten to hurt her if she was lying. Or if she wasn't home at a certain time. Courtney was really afraid of him.

"I think he's going to come over." She said. "I have a spare room. Do you want to sleep over?"

I agreed. But I really had to pee. So I went to Courtney's bathroom. And that's where the weird stuff happened.

I had just closed the door when I heard the window crack. It was locked, because Courtney was afraid of Mike. I heard a man outside, struggling with it. I freaked out. I don't know what I though to do, but I turned off the light and got in the bathtub. After a few minutes the man gave up. He said "Fuck!" And left. I came out and told Courtney.

She called the police, and they said they'd come right away. But it was only about 10 minutes until they got there. And as soon as 5 minutes passed we heard the doorbell ring. It was Mike. But Courtney didn't answer it. The police got there, and they asked Mike if he had broken her window. Of course he said no, but Courtney told the police she had no reason to lie about him.

They took him away.

But I was really weirded out. I had never dealt with anything like that. I decided to go home as soon as possible. My stepdad answered the door.

"Hey, kiddo! I was worried about you!" he said.

"Huh?" I said.

"You missed your curfew. I was going to call Courtney's mom, but I figured you were probably at her house anyway. But I didn't want you staying out too late."

"What time is it?" I asked.

"About 10:30" he said.

"No, I left Courtney's house at 11:00" I said.

We were both really confused. I thought maybe I dreamed the whole thing. But I knew I hadn't dreamed Mike. I was afraid to be home alone, so I decided to stay in my parent's room. But when I went to get my pajamas I realized that someone had been in my room.

All of my clothes were missing. I had no idea where they were. I asked my parents if they had washed them, but they said they had just done the laundry a few days ago. Then I started to feel really weirded out. I was talking to my mom about it, when I saw my dad out the window. He was looking through our windows.

"Weird..." I said.

"What?" My mom asked.

"I just saw my dad out the window." I said.

"Why is that weird?" My mom asked.

"Because he lives in a different neighborhood." I said.

My mom was concerned, but she thought my dad might have just moved and I didn't know.

Then my parents started arguing. My stepdad said we should call the police, but my mom thought we shouldn't bother them over a little thing like this. But I told them about my clothes.

"What were you doing with my clothes?" My mom asked.

"I wasn't doing anything!" I said.

My mom started to cry. She was scared, but she knew she had to be brave for me.

"You know, I don't think we should talk about this anymore." She said. "Let's go to bed. We can look into it in the morning."

My stepdad and I both agreed, but we didn't go to bed. We went to my parent's room, closed the door, and talked until 5 in the morning. We were trying to figure out who would have been in my room. The only people we didn't suspect were my mom and my sister. That left about 100 people.

We decided to bring some things to my sister's attention in the morning. She was always talking about her friends. We were going to try to keep track of who she was talking about, and see if we could find a connection. But in the morning my sister had already left for work.

My mom and my stepdad were both too tired to go to work. They were going to figure out where my clothes were, and who had taken them. But I wasn't too tired. I had to go to school. I was really quiet all day, though. My friends kept asking if I was okay. I worried they were going to think I was weird.

When school was over, my math teacher stopped me. She asked if I was okay. I told her I wasn't feeling good. She asked if I could tell her anything else, and I should have just kept my mouth shut. I was just so distraught that I told her everything.

I told her about my dad and all my clothes going missing and the whole Mike thing. I told her about my mom and stepdad arguing. I just kept going on and on. And when I finished, she just looked at me strangely. Like she didn't believe me.

"What?" I asked.

"Well... I saw something that I think you should know." She said. "Yesterday, when I was driving to school, I saw you walking into the projects. Or at least... It looked like you."

"Huh?" I asked.

"You know that one neighborhood full of projects? The one everyone calls the slum? I saw you walking in there. I figured you were going to visit a friend or something."

I didn't know what to say. I think I had a panic attack.

I didn't tell my mom or my stepdad about that. I told them I was okay. I felt like I had already hurt them enough. I was sure that I had somehow hallucinated the whole thing.

But then I started finding my clothes in weird places. Like the shower. Or my mom's room. It was so strange. I knew I hadn't just left them there.

I never found out who had broken my friends window or who had broken into my room. I never figured out why my clothes were all over the place. But I never forgot about it. I never forgot how I felt. Like I was going crazy.

I'm 24 now, and I'm totally sane. But I still look back on it and think, "What the hell?"
