As a medley of medical students, we found that the major source of stress comes in the first few weeks. Here is some advice.

Hello, I am a medical student over at r/medstudent. But I see a lot of posts here asking advice on becoming a doctor and so on. Instead of offering advice one by one, I asked some of my classmates to help me compile this for everyone.

\-----------

\*\*Pick an efficient method for studying\*\*

This is very important. Some people prefer the Pomodoro method, others are more for a brief reading session with a nice nap in between.

>Be prepared to put in the work, because it can be challenging. Take breaks when you feel you have to, it is just like working out. When you are finished with a subject, you shouldn’t have to second guess if you did enough. \
>Paul, 2nd year.

\*\*The library is great, but occasionally, it can be good to study elsewhere.\*\*

This lifts some of the weight off your shoulders. I study in the library a lot, but sometimes I like to go home and change environments. You get a lot played by the environment, like if you always study in the same spot, you will only be able to learn there and nowhere else.

>Use your library! The library has been adapted to best suit your needs. It can be dark, but just bring a desk lamp, I’ve done it for four years. \
>Jonathan, 2nd year.

\*\*First week is bad, it is a lot to take in. Just get over the first week, you will feel better.\*\*

It's a lot to get used to. You have to adapt to a completely different and unfamiliar environment. Hiding away from your professors won't help you at all, trust us.

>“Let’s play it simple, it’s a lot. Just take it day by day! Don’t freak yourself out. You’ll be okay. \
>\\
>Especially the first week. It’s gonna be a lot. It’s hard but every year you’ll get closer to the end by just showing up. \
>\\
>It’s not for everyone, but I truly believe that if you make it to year three, you’ll love it. \
>\\
>And if you can’t do it, don’t be afraid to change. \
>\\
>Lastly, if you like it, you’ll never regret it.”\
>Rebecca, 4th year.

\*\*You don’t need to study 8-10 hours a day straight.\*\*

I hear people say this a lot. It’s not needed. You can easily get the work you need to do done in 5 hours. 8 hours of study is a lot, but you don’t necessarily "study" every second of it. There’s no need to take notes on the entire lecture or anything like that.

>When I first started, there was a lot of pressure to study a lot. I saw people around me just studying what felt like all day. The amount of time doesn’t matter nearly as much as how you use it. \
>Valaris, 3rd year.

\*\*Studytips\*\*

>water!\
>gym!\
>friend outside of med school!\
>Notes must be equal to 1 standard 4-ring binder per block.

>\\

>Emily, 4th year.
