I'm a 13 year old boy just learned about communism yesterday. Does this sub know about the Chinese Great Leap Forward?

Hi. All I know about this website is that it's a dumb place to discuss politics. As a Canadian, I'm a centrist. I can already tell anyone in this sub is gonna be a loonie on either end of the spectrum. So, I just lurk to amuse myself.

Today I've seen some people say that the Chinese Great Leap Forward wasn't a communist regime. It was a capitalist regime with communist ideals. And I'm wondering if this sub actually knows what happened, or just blaming it on capitalism.

The Great Leap Forward was a period in human history where Chinese leader Mao Zedong wanted to rapidly industrialize and collectivize Chinese labor. He made the rural farmers work in giant communist farms where all the food was taken to the city and they had to eat a small ration.

Because the farms were not run by the people who worked on them, but instead by the government, they were really bad at producing food. The communists didn't understand how to run the farms since they were in charge and not the people that worked on them. The cities kept telling the farms how much they needed to produce in order for the cities to be fed. The people who worked in the farms didn't want to work. So they lied to the cities about how much food they were producing.

The cities sent out more and more people to work on the farms because the cities were convinced that the farms were producing more and more food. This meant that there was a large labor force on the farms, but not enough food to feed everyone.

Because of this, and other factors, 20-60 million people starved to death. The collectivization of the farms caused one of the worst human catastrophes in human history.

Communism definitely wasn't the solution to the problems that China was facing. It caused a lot of people to starve.

Again, just for clarification, I'm 13 and I know jack shit. I'm just repeating what Rick Steve's said.
