My fiancee and I bought our first house last year. The house was built in 2003, so not super old. We've had to replace the roof this year, and a new water heater. It's so nice have the extra bedroom as well as office space.

My sister and her boyfriend rent a super nice new apartment. They were saying how they don't want to own a house because of having to worry about maintenance/upkeep. I'm not saying it's not an issue. But with the amount of money we save each month on our mortgage over renting a new place, I can kind of deal with the hassle of having to fix the house. Plus, how is owning a house yours? I like the freedom of being able to do what we want to the house.

The thing is, they gave me a list of stuff they'd like in their house. We have all that stuff on their list. I told them it's probably going to be a while before they can afford a house with what they want, they said it wouldn't be a big deal, they like where they are at now.

But to me, owning a house is just a huge step toward true freedom. We've been buffering our savings to be able to make the house payment without work, along with other stuff. I just assumed owning a house was most people's goal, especially when they get older. But they say they don't want that, they'll just rent where ever they go.

Am I crazy in thinking owning a house is just such an important thing? Or is it just not as big of a deal for everybody?
