What are your thoughts on a universal one child policy?

I realize this is more political than philosophical but in recent years I've found myself more and more interested in philosophy.

I've been thinking about a universal one child policy and how it would affect society. The world's population is unsustainable with our current consumption habits and we can't adopt sustainable habits until it's too late, so the best thing in this case would be to just limit how many people exist.

Pros -
The most obvious pro, is that fewer people means less of a strain on the planet (though this would only be true if our habits remain the same, it would likely lead to more innovative and sustainable ways of living). In some places like China, where there is a cultural preference for having a son, having a one child policy would bring more gender equality.

Cons -
We would lose a massive amount of tax revenues since there would be much fewer people in the workforce. Governments rely on the new generations to pay for retirees pensions, etc. There would be a massive generational gap. Governments would have to massively change the way they operate and I don't see that happening anytime soon.
