I stopped buying stuff before it goes on sale. This might seem obvious to some of you, but it was a real epiphany for me, and it has been super effective at stopping impulse buys and overspending in a way that a shopping ban never could. Stop shopping Stop buying stuff right away unless it is to replace something essential. Wait until it goes on sale before buying anything non-essential. If the price was too high at first but becomes reasonable at the sale price, buy it at the sale price. What you bought was worth the sale price but not the original price. Most people buy things before they go on sale and end up paying more than they are worth. They also end up buying things that they don’t need and that aren’t worth the money. Buy secondhand Buy secondhand. Secondhand is cheaper, sustainable, and you know that it is worth the money. If it is secondhand, it has likely already depreciated to its real value. If you manage to snag it early in its depreciation cycle, you can resell it for the price that you bought it for in a few years. Stop hoarding Stop stockpiling and hoarding everything. There is no more than a 2% chance that you will ever use it, and you will lose track of it and forget that you have it. Stockpiling is a waste of money and a waste of space and resources. It also leads to impulse purchases and overspending. Be realistic Ask yourself if you are buying something because you actually need it or if you are desperate and trying to fill a void. If you are desperate and trying to fill a void, waiting until it goes on sale or buying secondhand won’t help. You need to address the underlying problem instead. Don’t reinvent the wheel Don’t reinvent the wheel. If you need something, go straight to the source. Most things have a original version or a prototype that was created before newer versions were created. If you want to buy a brand new version of something, go for the original prototype version instead of the modernized version. The original is usually cheaper and better value. It is also more authentic and sustainable. When it comes to clothes, go for high-quality basics instead of more expensive trendy pieces. When it comes to home decor, go for timeless pieces instead of trendy pieces. When it comes to tools, go for the original instead of the modernized version. The original was created to solve a problem and it is usually better value. By stopping impulsive spending and being more mindful and intentional with your purchases, you can save money, reduce waste, and live a more sustainable life.
