Those who say you can’t stop something that has already been invented were wrong 100 years ago and are wrong now.

Gunpowder was clearly a bad invention. The world became vastly more violent with the invention of firearms. Yet many countries passed laws that practically all citizens must turn in their firearms. To me, this was an amazing achievement. I would have thought that the cat was out of the bag with the invention of firearms and that people would have been too violent to give them up. But they did it. In the UK, Australia, New Zealand, and many other countries, the people decided that firearms were a bad invention and decided to get rid of them practically all together. And what happened? These countries became vastly less violent and crime dropped. And the UK has been able to keep that level of safety for 100 years.

Similarly, nuclear weapons are a bad invention. The world became vastly more dangerous with nuclear weapons. Yet, due to the fact that nuclear weapons are so dangerous, many countries agreed not to have them. They were able to stop them from being used as they were so dangerous. This is not only countries that have agreed not to have them, but it is also countries that could technically have them if they wanted to but choose not to. Think of Japan. Japan could very easily build ICBM nuclear missiles in a matter of months. Yet Japan has chosen not to have nuclear weapons. This is because the inventors and politicians realized that nuclear weapons were a bad invention and decided not to have them.

There is the argument too that nuclear weapons have actually kept the world safer and have stopped a third world war. This is a terrible argument. Just because something may have kept something worse from happening doesn’t mean that it is a good thing. Or that we should be accepting of it. Yet most people don’t argue that we should stop nuclear weapons because they have made the world safer. Most people call for nuclear disarmament. Nuclear weapons are something that everyone can agree are a bad invention. Even though they may have technically made the world safer, they are still seen as a bad invention and most people agree that we would be better off without them.

So, the argument that once something is invented it can never be “uninvented” is a bad argument. Once something is invented, people have the choice of whether they want to keep it or not. And with AI and Nukes they both have the capability to wipe out humanity. Yet only one is seen as a bad thing and one is seen as a “progress” that we have to live with. I believe that we should do everything in our power to stop AI. Nothing is more important than the safety of our species. If that means slowing down technological “progress,” then so be it. I would rather be safe then have slightly more convenience. And if you were a mother or a father, I would think that you would want to protect your children at all costs. So, yeah, do everything we can to stop AI. And if that can’t happen, and AI is able to wipe out our species, then we just have to try harder next time.
