I am a proud mum of a 12 year old daughter, and today she walked in while I was playing "I want women to register for the draft" on Joe Rogan. She had never heard of this issue before, and she was triggered. She is a feminist, not like me (she is the "performative feminist" type I guess you could say, while I am more of the "burn the patriarchy" type), but still very much a feminist. I teach her feminism at home, and she already knows to question everything, especially when it comes to patriarchy. So, when she heard what Joe was saying, she was appalled. She said "wait, so you want women to be forced into a war they don't want to be in? So you want women to be forced to give their lives, to die, for a country they may not even believe in? So you want to force women to be raped?"

Joe was saying that if women want equality, they need to be drafted just like men are. He refused to acknowledge that rape and assault are a major problem in the military. He also refused to acknowledge the fact that women are already in the draft, or at least they are supposed to be. In 2015, a federal judge ruled that it is unconstitutional to exclude women from the draft. Joe was acting like he didn't know that. He was saying that women don't want to be in the draft, that they want to be equal but not be in danger. He refused to acknowledge the fact that women, including trans women who are actually men, have been serving in the military for decades. He said "women aren't drafted, so they aren't equal". But what he doesn't get, is that the draft is unconstitutional, it's fucked up, and it is built on patriarchy. It was originally created to force men into war, and now Joe wants to force women into war as well.

So, I sat my daughter down, and I educated her on this issue. I showed her all the statistics on rape and assault in the military, I showed her the court ruling that made the draft unconstitutional, and I showed her the history of the draft. I taught her that a real feminist would never want to force women into a war, a real feminist would want to abolish the draft all together.

Then I asked her "what do you think about this issue now?" And she said "I think that any man who wants to force women into a war is a misogynist". I was so proud of her, and I am still proud of her. A real feminist would never want to force women into a war, and my daughter now understands that.
