It's a post-apocalyptic dystopian future, I'm not sure what caused the apocalypse, nor do I know exactly how I got here. But I'll fight until I die to protect those that I love.

**I was fifteen years old. I’m not sure weather it was murder, robbery, or I was mistaken of being a vigilante. But whatever I had done, I had been sentenced to death.**

I wasn’t afraid to die. I wasn’t scared because I knew I was a bad person. But once I got to my cell, I realized I was about to be a part of something much bigger than myself.

It was a young girl. I wasn’t much older myself, but she was even younger. She didn’t look any older than 10. Now, I don’t know if this was a normal thing where I lived, but I’ve may have been a bad person, but that didn’t mean I wanted to see a child the same age as my little brother die. She told me she was my cell mate. I told her that I had been sentenced to die, and I was waiting for my execution.

She looked at me with sad eyes.

“I know,” she said. “I know exactly what you’re here for, and I’m sorry.”

She looked at me with sad eyes.

“Me too”, I said.

“Why? You didn’t do anything wrong. You’re the only one who can help me,” she said.

I couldn’t help but question why this little girl was so confident in me. Where I lived, the law was simple. If you committed a crime, you would be given the death penalty. There were no exceptions. But the government didn’t just take a person's life without trying to get something from them first.

Before you were killed, you were sent to a facility. These facilities were prisons where the people contained within had a very specific job.

Youtubing.

That’s right. Before you were killed, you started a YouTube channel. The government paid for all the equipment you needed, and you were given a few months to build up an audience. From there, you were killed. The government then took over your channel, and you became a propaganda channel. They took your old content, then made new content using AI, creating fake videos like they were you. They then used these new videos to brainwash your viewers, telling them to do whatever the government said. I had thought it was crazy at first, but it worked. There were thousands of these propaganda channels, and they all followed the same format.

Create a channel. Build an audience. Then you die.

Well, not die. Obviously. They weren’t going to just kill us. They needed us to do this. So, I was now a clone of myself, and I had been placed in a cell with a little girl who was also a clone of herself.

I looked at her.

“What’s your name? She asked.

“Alexandria. But what makes you think I’m going to help you?,” I said.

She looked at me with sad eyes.

“Because I have no one else,” she said.

And, for some reason, I cared about this little girl. She had said that I was the only one who could help her? How? Why? I just met this girl. I was going to be a clone and this girl was going to be a clone. Why had she chosen me?

I thought about this for a moment. It was obvious that my thoughts were clear on my face, because she smiled.

“Alexandria. You’re not thinking like a clone,” she said.

I looked at her.

“What do you mean?,” I said.

She smiled.

“Because right now, you’re not thinking like a clone. You’re thinking like a person,” she said.

She was right. I may have been a clone, but I was still a person.

“How did you know I was thinking like this?,” I said.

She smiled.

“Because, Alex, I’m not a clone. Well, I was, but I was never supposed to be a clone in the first place. I’m one of a kind,” she said.

I was confused.

“What do you mean? How are you a clone if you're not a clone?,” I said.

She smiled.

“Well, Alex, I was never supposed to be a clone. I was never supposed to exist. But one day, I woke up, and here I was. I was a surprise, and I was the only one of my kind. There's no other like me. I was never supposed to be a clone, but I am. And I’m the only clone that is different. The only one that is a person. But it’s not just me who is a clone. Everyone in this facility is a clone. The guards, the camera man, the person who monitors our social media. Everyone. The only people that aren't clones are the government and the real people who the clones are based off of.

But you see, Alex, I can’t disappear. If someone figures out that I’m alive, they’lll kill me. So, that’s why I’ve been placed in the same cell as you. Something from our past. Something that makes us very special,” she said.

I thought back to my past. I didn’t know what she was talking about.

“What?”, I said.

She smiled.

“Well, Alex, did you ever notice that everyone in these facilities were people that were sentenced to death because of a violent crime?,” she said.

I nodded.

“What is the point of that?,” I said.

She smiled.

“There's a machine that can take the memories and thoughts of a person, and put them into a clone. But with one catch. The people who are cloned must have died in a violent manner. If they don’t, the clones will never be perfect. They will never truly be alive. But if they do, it makes them more perfect. They’re still clones, but they’re as close to being a human as they possibly can be. And the government doesn’t just take the thoughts and memories out for the people who the clones are based off of, but also the celebrities who die in violent manners. Have you ever wondered why there are so many celebrities who are still alive? And why most of them are so crazy? It's because they're clones,” she said.

I was shocked. I had never heard of this. But it made sense. That’s why my clone was me. I had died a violent death. That's why everyone I saw was a clone. That’s why the government took my thoughts and memories. Because I died a violent death. I had never realized this, but oh my, it made sense.

She smiled.

“So, now that you know everything, what's next?,” I said.

She smiled.

“Well, Alex, there's a fight coming. It's a fight between humans and clones. The humans are sick of being controlled by the government and its propaganda channels. So, they have organized an army to fight against the government. We're not part of that army, but we have our own war. We need to save everyone in this facility. Save them from the government, and save them from themselves. Clones deserve to know that they're clones, and they deserve to have a choice. Humans deserve to know about the government, and they deserve to have a choice. So, that's what we're going to do. We’re going to fight for the clones and the humans. For the people who deserve to be treated like humans. For the people who deserve to know the truth.”

And, with that, we began.
