Gamers are ruining the hobby (and the sub)

First of all, this is not an attack on people that enjoy video games or games in general, but you will see what I mean.

When I first joined the worldbuilding community, it was a place for mostly writers and cartographers (and other forms of artists), sometimes even musicians, to create new worlds, and to discuss methods of making these worlds realistic. It was a great place, and sometimes even a great resource. The majority of the posts just focused on creating a realistic world, map, character, or piece of music.

These days however, because of the massive surge in popularity of TTRPGs and virtual worldbuilding, there are many newbie worldbuilders with no experience joining the hobby. While this would be great if they were actually trying to create new worlds from scratch, it’s mostly just people jumping on the bandwagon.

Don’t get me wrong. I have nothing against TTRPGs or video games, but people don’t join the hobby to create worlds. They join to create worlds for TTRPGs or video games. This makes it seems like worldbuilding is only for creating TTRPG worlds, not to create worlds of their own. It isn’t just in worldbuilding, it’s in cartography and other related hobbies too. So often now cartographers design their maps with the idea of making it optimized for TTRPGs, or making it ready for fellow gamers to join and play with a group of friends.

I would just wish that there was more variety and diversity within the hobby, and within the sub.
